I recently found a new website to help aspiring young musicians showcase their talents, find other musicians, and even win cash prizes in one of their contests. It’s called Pavoh.org, and you can also find them on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.
Part of the website “Learn” is dedicated to helping students learn about different genres of music including classical, rock, jazz, electronic, and world music in addition to others. Each section also touches on other subjects like how to find a teacher, and websites or apps for learning music theory.
The other main section of the website “Play” has resources for students who are already in bands or are making music on their own. There are sections for helping young musicians find other musicians their age, gig opportunities for underage musicians, where to get scholarships for music schools, and information about careers in the arts. Students can also share their music in a non-troll infested environment (i.e. YouTube) and get constructive criticism and/or positive feedback.
They’re running a contest right now in fact. During the month of November, you can submit your music on the facebook page, and then winner in each genre will win a $75 cash prize and be listed as a featured artist. Musicians aged 19 and under are eligible, and accepted genres include rock, blues, country, folk, classical, jazz, hip hop, a capella, world music, electronic, and opera.
Pavoh.org is a great resource for young students, and has done a great job of putting together all the tools necessary for young musicians to master their instrument, connect with other musicians their age, and showcase their talents. I wish a website like this had existed when I was in high school – but then, the internet didn’t exist then either :p
